Message from our Chaplain Mairie
I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday and Happy Easter. Although we have had 40 days for Lent, we now have 50 days for Easter – so do keep celebrating.
Thank you to everyone who has supported our students in their Lent charity fundraising – it has been such a successful few weeks time and great to see so many enthusiastically involved. The fundraising can continue to the end of next week (6th May) and I hope to be able to announce our total soon after. I met with one of the CARITAS workers over Easter and they were delighted that we have committed so well to this important work both locally and internationally.
Our Gospel Values for this term is ‘Purity and Holiness‘ and we can look to Mary as an example of how we can include these values in our lives. We are reminded that God sees each one of us as unique and blessed. We can come up against challenges that try to persuade us into unhelpful and negative ways of being. We are called back to reflect and respond, to choose good and positive ways to live, to be good examples and to move towards being the people we really want to be.
We look forward to celebrating the Year 11 Celebration Mass next Tuesday at 6.00pm in the Assembly Hall. This is a special milestone in the Year 11 journey, and we are delighted to be able to celebrate it with students and families.
During May there will be a focus on the Rosary and, particularly, the Hail Mary. May is a traditional time for this and responds to Pope Francis’ request to pray for peace. We will be providing rosaries to form groups so that they can pray together for their particular intentions.
Stanley Igoe Cup
On Wednesday 13th April, Year 11 took part in the Stanley Igoe Cup, commemorating two former students, Claire Stanley and Michael Igoe who sadly passed away during their time at St Nicholas.
The competition has taken place every year for the past twenty years with only a break for the past two years.
This year it was a joy to once again be able to see the Year 11 students competing in rugby and netball. They were divided into countries and Ireland came out on top.
Well done to everyone who took part.
The Joy of Audiobooks

Research from the Reading Agency confirms that listening to audio books can improve literacy skills in reluctant readers. Positive engagement with audiobooks can specifically develop decoding and comprehension skills, while supporting reading enjoyment, wellbeing, and emotional intelligence. Audio books allow students to access stories beyond their reading level. They can hear them in a range of exciting voices and accents and understand expressions and nuances which are not always clear from printed books. The Reading Agency’s findings can be read here:

https://literacytrust.org.uk/information/what-is-literacy/audiobooks-and-literacy/

Audio books can be costly. However, Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester Public libraries have a wide range of eBooks and audio books available to access online. All you need is a library membership, a pin and to download the Borrow Box app.
