Message from our Chaplain Mairie

This week we have been reflecting on Refugee Week. This poem certainly challenges our perceptions and reminds us not to take for granted the lives that we are blessed with.

Read the poem then read from the bottom up…

Refugees by Brian Bilston

They have no need of our help
So do not tell me
These haggard faces could belong to you or me
Should life have dealt a different hand
We need to see them for who they really are
Chancers and scroungers
Layabouts and loungers
With bombs up their sleeves
Cut-throats and thieves
They are not
Welcome here
We should make them
Go back to where they came from
They cannot
Share our food
Share our homes
Share our countries
Instead let us
Build a wall to keep them out
It is not okay to say
These are people just like us
A place should only belong to those who are born there
Do not be so stupid to think that
The world can be looked at another way.

Now – did you remember to read it from the bottom to the top?

Prayer

Almighty and merciful God,
whose Son became a refugee
and had no place to call his own,
look with mercy on those who today
are fleeing from danger,
homeless and hungry.

Bless those who work to bring them relief.
Inspire generosity and compassion in the hearts of all of us.
Guide us and every nation of the world towards that day
when all will rejoice in your Kingdom of justice and of peace;
Through Jesus Christ, our Brother and our Lord .
Amen.

The Choir at Cheshire Show
Congratulations to Choir and Orchestra who performed at the Cheshire Show on Wednesday…they were fantastic ambassadors for our school.
The weather was biblical- we were soaked, music was soaked and the orchestra couldn`t sit down to play as the seats were wet-through! The show went on and they performed brilliantly.

Library and Literacy
A group of Year 8 students had the privilege of meeting Tamsin Winter online during a webinar made possible by Authors Allowed this week. Tamsin discussed how she became an author, her writing process and her new book Bad Influence. The book follows the story of Amelia Bright, a star student who is good at almost everything….except being popular. In her quest for popularity, Amelia makes the mistake of sending an intimate picture of herself to a boy. When her picture is shared online, she has to deal with the consequences. You’ll have to read the book to find out what happens, but the most important message of the story is that there is life, love and laughter after devastating embarrassment.
The Year 8 students put forward some excellent questions to Tamsin. Will McDonald, Anya Meenan and Finn Costello-Kelly had a special mention from Tamsin as she answered their funny and insightful questions.
We have the opportunity to purchase signed copies of the books at £8.99 each (£7.00 if we have six or more orders). This will be available via parent pay from Monday.
Early warning of strike days
As you will have seen in the news, the National Education Union have announced two strike days in July.
