Message from our Chaplain Mairie
We have listened, with sadness, to the reports of the boat capsizing off the coast of Greece this week. As emergency services and rescue charities work together to support survivors, we are reminded that next week is Refugee Awareness week. The theme for this year is Compassion and there has never been a more deserving time to show this generosity of spirit to those in need.

We know how interconnected our world is: how something seemingly “far away” impacts everyone. All of this makes us even more aware of the need to widen our circles of compassion. Within our own experiences are all the tools we need to be compassionate, not just to ourselves and those in our immediate circle but to all our human neighbours and our one shared home, planet earth.

Pope Francis prayer for Migrants
Merciful God and Father of all,
wake us from the slumber of indifference,
open our eyes to their suffering,
and free us from the insensitivity born of worldly comfort and self-centredness.
Inspire us, as nations, communities and individuals,
to see that those who come to our shores are our brothers and sisters.
Amen

Sixth Form Welcome Day

On Monday 26th June we are delighted to welcome all of our Sixth Form applicants for September 2023 an opportunity to come into school and experience a day in the life of a student within St Nicholas Sixth Form. Students will follow a timetable of their chosen subjects to deepen their understanding, whilst providing the opportunity to try a new subject if they wish. We have some of our Year 13 students returning to pass on their experiences and top tips, and of course students will be able to experience the unique community feel of our Common Room. All our applicants should have received a letter in the post outlining the plans for our Welcome Day as well as a QR code to register your response. If your child would like to join us and you have not yet completed the short form indicating interest please use the link below to register interest as soon as possible.

Revised Sixth Form Dress Code

Myself and Mrs Crowe along with the Student Leadership Team and students from the wider Sixth Form community have been working on a revised version of the Sixth Form Dress Code for some considerable time. This has involved hours of discussion, students presenting to both SLT and sending proposals to Governors.

I’m delighted to say that last week a revised version of the dress code was ratified by our school Governors. There has been considerable influence of student voice and is much more reflective of what our students would like to wear, whilst maintaining the fundamental principles that they are still part of a wider school community and therefore must still dress responsibly.

The revised dress code has been launched with our Year 12 students and has been sent to all of our Year 11 applicants via their school email. I will also go through the main points of the revised dress code during our Sixth Form Welcome Day.

Library and Literacy
Refugee Week

It’s Refugee Week next week and to celebrate the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary, we have developed a Refugee Week collection of books in the library.

The theme of this year’s Refugee Week is “Compassion”. Books and stories are an excellent way of developing children’s and young people’s compassion for those whose lives are different to ours, especially if we are unlikely to interact with many refugees in our day to day lives. Books with refugee characters help us to recognise refugees as the individuals they are, with hopes and dreams similar to our own, rather than simply viewing them as the statistics we here about in the news.

We can support Refugee Week by reading refugee themed books, recommending them to friends and family, and even posting about them on social media using the following hashtags

#RefugeeWeek

#SimpleActs

#CompassionIntoAction

For further book recommendations, please see the links below.  We have all the teen titles in the library although some are currently out on loan.
