Message from our Chaplain Mairie
Welcome back to this busy and exciting half-term. These few weeks are a time of transition. Year 11 and 13 are working hard at their exams, whilst also looking forward to Prom and a different kind of summer. We have just voted in our new head prefects and look forward to working with them to build a new team for the new school year. In the meantime, Year 10 and Year 12 are reminded that they are now part-way through their examination studies.
Soon we will be welcoming in Year 6 for their taster days as they begin to think about their new life at St Nicholas. Lots of other events have filled up our calendar as we make the most of this time together.
Transition can be uncomfortable for some, but we are all here to support each other through these next weeks, moving towards the next step along the way. We pray to make the most of our gifts and talents and all the opportunities we are offered.
Science club

This term Science club are learning about AI with Stemillions x DeepMind.  We have been provided with a AI STEM club in a box from Stemettes.  We had our first session today where we met Kate, a leading scholar on the implications of AI and then learnt about the anatomy of an Artificial Intelligence.  Over the next few weeks, we will be meeting other female/non-binary role models in this field and are excited about what we will discover.  If you would like to join us this term, come along to S5 on a Tuesday lunchtime 12.45-1.15pm.

Carole Silver retiring

Carole Silver, who has worked tirelessly for the school, is retiring after 25 years of service. Carole has been a mid-day assistant, sorted out the teas and coffees for the teachers in the staffroom and has been in charge of filing and organising.

Carole has always been an extremely positive dinner lady who has forged great relationships with staff and students. We will miss her smile and her words of wisdom.

Thank you to Mrs McEvoy, Miss Taylor and the pupils for creating a beautiful hand crafted bouquet of flowers to mark her retirement. We all wish Carole all the best.

Sporting Success – Caelan Haydon
Last weekend Caelan Haydon, Year 7,  competed in the Nationals, individually and with a synchronised routine. He finished 5th in the country individually and has qualified to British Championships for 2023. He and his friend, Charlie got the Silver medal in the synchronised routine, also securing a place at the British Championships.
What an amazing achievement.

Library and Literacy
Celebrating Pride Month
Pride Month has arrived, and the library is celebrating all our wonderful LGBTQ+ users with a newly replenished Pride book collection. It is so important for children and teenagers to be able to see themselves represented in popular fiction to develop confidence in their self-identity and to foster a sense of belonging and community. Discovering characters and plots that they can relate to encourages teens to pick up new books and can help to develop a love of reading that was previously lacking when reading about characters they didn’t identify with. Reading books with a diverse cast of characters can help all teens develop a sense of empathy and understanding for those different from themselves.
