Message from our Chaplain Mairie

This week we have been following the COP26 meeting in Glasgow and considering our own responses to the needs of the world. Pope Francis, in his letter, ‘Laudato Si’, asks a very searching question; ‘When we ask ourselves what kind of world we want to leave behind, we think in the first place of its general direction, its meaning and its values. Unless we struggle with these deeper issues, I do not believe that our concern for ecology will produce significant results. But if these issues are courageously faced, we are led inexorably to ask other pointed questions: What is the purpose of our life in this world? ‘ Certainly, something to think about.

Thank you again for all your support for our October charity. We have just heard from Mid-Cheshire Foodbank that the donation of groceries amounted to an amazing 323.6kg!
About half of the donated coats have gone to local charities and the rest have been donated to a charity helping CARITAS as they support Afghan refugees who are presently living in a hotel near Manchester airport. Refugees receive just under £6 a day to live on. Hopefully, we will be able to support this charity with other collections in the future.

Library and literacy News

Reading for pleasure is more important for children’s cognitive development than their parents’ level of education and is a more powerful factor in life achievement than socio-economic background (https://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/id/eprint/1473708/).

A good tip to encourage your child to read is to direct them towards books with themes which echo their interests and/or current events.  With Remembrance Day around the corner, the library has had many requests from students for war themed books.  I can recommend the following resources.

Remembrance Day Literacy Resources

Tom Palmer is the author of a number of excellent books which convey the many different aspects of war.  He recently filmed a Remembrance Day assembly at the Arctic Convoys memorial at Liverpool Parish Church, in which he talks about and reads from his latest children’s book “Arctic Star” about three young naval recruits braving the Arctic Convoys during the Second World War.  This can be accessed via https://tompalmer.co.uk/remembrance-day-2021/.

Explore Tom Palmer’s website to discover further war themed fiction.

The Young Photographer Challenge: Charity Competition
Help us provide essential support for youth mental health

“Every photo is…a vulnerable act of courage to build empathy.” (Bryce Evans)

Studies show that 60% of young people feel unable to cope with stress induced by the pressure to succeed. Research also shows that the visualisation of a tranquil place can help reduce stress, anxiety and fear.

In honour of this and stress awareness week, we invite students aged 12-18 to enter our competition, The Young Photographer Challenge. Students should submit a photograph of their ‘peaceful place’ along with a title and short explanation. Creativity is highly encouraged!

The competition is free to enter and for each entry we shall make a donation to Stem4, a youth mental health charity. The deadline for entries is Tuesday 23rd November.
