Newsletter 14.05.2021

Message from Mairie
Yesterday marked the feast of The Ascension of the Lord. Forty days after Easter, Jesus returns to the Father, but first he invites his friends to carry on his work. This is the work of the Christian faith – to build a world of love and compassion. We have visited the Snow Angels charity to deliver over 400 cards of hope. These cards will go out with their newsletter to those people who are living in isolation or who are vulnerable in other ways. They are very small tokens that support the work of this amazing local charity. Small acts of kindness do add up though and are more than capable of changing the world.

Pope Francis reminds us,

‘Dear brothers and sisters, the Ascension does not point to Jesus’ absence, but tells us that he is alive in our midst in a new way. He is no longer in a specific place in the world as he was before the Ascension. He is now in the lordship of God, present in every space and time, close to each one of us. In our life we are never alone: we have this Advocate who awaits us, who defends us. We are never alone. ‘

A-Level Physics Masterclass

Over the Easter holiday 5 A-level Physics students took part in an “accelerator and particle physics masterclass” run remotely by Daresbury Laboratory. The event included virtual tours of Physics laboratories as well as some university level theory surrounding the topic of particle interactions and dark matter. The 5 students that registered participated in all 7 sessions across two days earning them a gold certificate. The students were:
Rachel Pullan, Scarlett Cox-Lomas, Byron Slaughter, Elise Costigan (Y12) and Lauren Halloran (Y13).
Congratulations to all who participated.

Sixth Form Gateway Programme launched!

The Gateway Programme is a bespoke series of support sessions running over an eighteen-month cycle to support St Nicholas students with their applications to Oxbridge, Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science courses after they leave Sixth Form. So far, we have had a number of meetings including a very interesting and detailed students’ perspective on applying for Medicine courses from two past Sixth Form students, Victoria Fletcher and Ronan Eves, who are in their third year of Medicine at the University of Leeds and the University of Edinburgh respectively. In addition to this, we also welcomed back Bella Manfredi who is in her first year at Cambridge, with Year 12 students able to ask questions and to get an overview of the Oxbridge application and experience from our  former Head Prefect of the School.

If you are keen on a career in Medicine or studying at an Oxbridge College, please make yourself known to either of us. Remember the only thing standing in your way is your own ambition!

Keep an eye on your school email for opportunities to apply for courses, visits and workshops around supporting your applications to Oxbridge, Medicine and Veterinary Sciences.
