Message from our Chaplain Mairie

November Remembrance

Our lunchtime Mass will be on Wednesday this week as it is All Saint’s Day and a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass begins about 12.40pm and finishes by 1.00pm. Fr  Simon is also going to celebrate Mass on Thursday lunchtime for the feast of All Souls. This is not a Holy Day of Obligation but is a time to pray for our friends and family, and for all the souls in Purgatory so that they may be taken into Heaven. Heaven, thankfully, is the only destination from Purgatory.

Please remind your child if you feel they would like to attend either of these Masses. If you would like to send in a prayer intention for All Souls then please email me at m.gelling@st-nicholas.cheshire.sch.uk and we will offer them at Mass.

For Masses across our area please see the newsletters or notices on the parish websites.

A week on Friday the whole school will hold a Remembrance commemoration during the day. This time of the year gives us permission to reflect on those we love and remember and it is important for the whole school community to be together for this.

 Winter collection
If you are planning on getting new winter coats or sorting out your wardrobe, please send any warm clothing, in good condition, into school for the chapel and we will get them to a good home. Thank you.

Sixth Form : Make a Wish

On Friday our Sixth Form Students looked slightly different – amazing costumes all round and we were raising money for Make a Wish Foundation. Make-A-Wish UK

We are incredibly proud of the effort all our students put in. A fun end to their first half term.

Library and Literacy

BOOKBUZZ

All year 7 students have ordered their FREE new book (to keep forever) from the library this week and we cannot wait for them to arrive. Students have had a wide variety of books to chose from and spent their latest library lessons learning about and discussing each one. From horror and mystery stories to comics and non-fiction there is something for everyone. We’re hoping each student will read and treasure their Bookbuzz books as a memento of their first year as members of St Nicholas Catholic High School Library.

Music News

Music at the Storyhouse

On Sunday, 15th October Music A Level students and Mrs McKenna went to the Storyhouse Theatre in Chester to hear the Northern Chamber Orchestra play Haydn’s Symphony 104, Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ piano concerto and a very unusual piece called the Unanswered Question! It was great to hear a professional orchestra and to support live music locally.

Sporting Success

U18 Football:
Monday saw a bumper evening of Cheshire Cup football for St Nicholas teams. At home, the U18 team were 2-1 victors against a strong Tarporley High School; E Turner and J Wall (pen) with the goals. We will now face Bishop Heber High School in the next round of the competition.

U16 Girls’ Football:
Also on Monday evening, the U16 Girls’ team travelled to Ellesmere Port Catholic High School. In a superb performance, they were 10-1 winners and progress into Round 2.

U13 Boys’ Football:
The Year 8 team were also in Cheshire Cup action on Monday evening and travelled to Poynton. After a fantastic game filled with goals, they were narrowly beaten 5-3 by a very strong opposition. There will still be opportunities for all students in Year 8 to have opportunities to represent the school in fixtures after half term.

U13 Girls’ Football:
On Tuesday, our Year 7/8 Girls’ team played in a friendly fixture against Middlewich High School. For many, this was their first opportunity to represent the school and they all played remarkably well, winning the game with a last-minute winning goal by E Kelly. This is testament to their hard-work, commitment and dedication in co-curricular practice on Tuesday evenings.

Year 7 Netball
On Monday 16th St Nicholas hosted a year 7 Netball festival with the main aim being participation and fun.
Both teams played extremely well against Knutsford, Leftwich and Hartford, trying out different positions and learning more about the game ready for the league fixtures.  Well done girls!

Co-Curricular Attendance:
This half term, we have been blown away by the incredible uptake of students staying after school for co-curricular sports clubs. Please continue to check the newsletter and PE notice boards in the changing rooms for clubs and opportunities after half term.
