Last week we commemorated Remembrance Day with the whole school coming together on the yard for a Two minute silence. We are always impressed with the respectful attitude of our students at this time. A short video including the prayer is here https://youtu.be/maAqeN5ay6g
This week is Anti-bullying Week with the theme of Make Some Noise. Speaking out against bullying is important for change to happen. Our Catholic Social Teaching talks about the dignity of every human being which means that everyone is unique and deserving of respect. Catholic Social Teaching also refer to the support of, and for, the wellbeing of the community. We work together to create a supporting community, filled with kindness and compassion for ourselves and for others. Change happens when people speak out.
Northwich Schools’ Chess Competition
Last Saturday saw the inaugural Northwich Schools’ Chess Competition. Four local schools (Weaverham, Hartford, St Nicholas and The Grange) and two local chess clubs (Northwich Juniors and Stockton Heath Juniors) entered a team of 5 players. It was an all-play-all format where the players are ranked from board 1 to 5 and play the equivalent player on the opposing team.
The St Nicholas team was Alex Bickerton (year 11), Joe Smith (year 10), Harry Cope (year 9), Harry Mitchell (year 11) and Finn Scott (year 11). Isaac Dixon (year 11) also played but was seconded to Weaverham who were short of players. We finished second overall, with 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss, being beaten by Stockton Heath Chess Club who had a perfect record of 5 wins. Alex Bickerton won the prize for best player overall, winning 4 out of his 5 games.
Chess Club is on Tuesday lunchtimes in M5, with occasional after school coaching sessions (see noticeboard outside M5 for details). All ages and abilities are welcome. We would like to give a special mention to the PTFA who have supported us over the past 2 years by purchasing boards, pieces and chess clocks for the club.
There was also a chess puzzle competition, which was won by Henry Morley of The Grange, who solved all 10 puzzles correctly.
You can have a go at one of the puzzles.
Black to play and win.
Year 11 have now finished their mock exams.
We have been very pleased with how the students have tackled the exams – most of them have risen to the occasion and spent time revising and concentrated well in this new situation.
We were all reminded that learning is never easy – and that with a bit of determination a lot of hard work, help and practice we can get to where we need to be.
Well done Year 11

ODD SOCKS DAY AND ANTI BULLYING WEEK
It has been great to see so many students with odd socks in school today. We are so pleased that students are embracing the idea and reflecting on the message of Anti-Bullying.
The students were perfect ambassadors for the school, asking and answering questions and showing their appreciation.
A brilliant day, where everyone learned a lot.
Music Festival
We are looking forward to welcoming our feeder primary schools to our Music Festival which will take place on Wednesday 15th November and Thursday 16th November.
On Wednesday we will hear from St Luke’s, St Bede’s and St Wilfrid’s Primary Schools and Thursday will be St Joseph’s, St Vincent’s and St Mary’s Primary Schools.
The evening will begin at 6pm and should finish at approximately 7pm. It will include performances from all our extra-curricular ensembles as well as pieces performed by each of the primary schools.
We are asking that all St Nicholas students who will be performing stay in school at 3.15pm to rehearse with the primary schools and then to act as ambassadors. We will provide tea for all students during which we will ask them to sit with our primary students and chat to them about life at St Nicholas`
We are not charging for this event but would be grateful if you could complete this form so that we have an idea of audience numbers.
Flu immunisation will take place in school on Wednesday 22nd November and is open to years 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11.
