Message from the Head

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope that you and your families are well.

We have had many events going on at St. Nicholas over the past few weeks and I hope you can find the time to see our Twitter (X) feeds to see the range of things going on.

We were proud to show our School Improvement Adviser around school last week, a very experienced Headteacher and previous School Inspector.  He works with 10 schools from across England and Wales.  He interviewed a number of students, looked at their books and walked the school at break and lunch time.   Here is an extract from his draft report, received on Friday:
  • All learners felt safe in the school. This was clear in the calm and orderly behaviour observed at both break and lunchtime. Good routines are established.
  • All felt that they had established good relationships with staff.
  • The positive attitudes to learning they expressed was evident in the books. All learners felt that they were part of a good school with high levels of achievement and high expectations.

  • A homework culture is established across the school.

Thank you for your continued support and for working with us.  We appreciate the time our parents and carers take to send in positive messages of support, as well as those who raise concerns in a respectful and courteous manner.  I would always encourage you to make contact with the school if you have any worries or concerns so that a member of our staff team can work with you to resolve matters.

Have a good week!

Best wishes,

Craig Burns

Message from our Chaplain Mairie

Mini DASH

Mini DASH is a termly meeting of students from across our diocesan high schools. This term we have put together a team from Year 8 supported by Sixth Form students. We discussed the responsibilities of servant leadership and how we, as Catholic schools, have a role in building a better world. We have some work to do back at school before our next meeting in February. Our students really enjoyed the opportunity to meet other students and to work together as a team. We were very proud of all our students as positive representatives of St Nicholas’.

Accessing the Foodbank
Whilst we hope that everyone is coping well, this is a difficult time for many, and we appreciate that there may be some families who are undergoing hardship because of changes in work or personal circumstances.

So that we may support our St Nicholas family we are registered as a referral organisation for the Foodbank. If you would like to have this support, we are able to process an on-line referral and arrange an appointment for you to collect a five-day food package from an agreed centre.

Mairie Gelling, our chaplain, is the school link for this provision. Email m.gelling@st-nicholas.cheshire.sch.uk or ring the school office.

Please do contact us if we can be of help in this manner. As always, our conversation and any information that we need to pass on to the Foodbank, will be treated with the utmost confidentiality. For alternative access, you can also contact the local Citizens Advice in the Community on

Advice from the NHS

A parent’s guide to keeping kids healthy this school year

As the new school year begins, children, teenagers and their parents prepare for new schedules, homework, friends, and activities. But the autumn also brings common illnesses that can keep children and teenagers away from their classmates and studies.

This blog post covers steps you can take now and throughout the coming term to help protect your family from seasonal illnesses. We’ll explore available vaccinations, how to recognise symptoms of common illnesses, and how to make informed decisions on whether a sick student is well enough to attend school or college.

Teach good hygiene habits

Good hygiene stops infections from spreading, which means less disrupted learning time.

Know when to keep your child at home

The start of a new term is a good time to familiarise yourself with the symptoms of common illnesses. For some, but not all, illnesses, it will be important to keep your child at home to stop their infection spreading to others.

The NHS has a useful guide here to help parents decide whether a child is well enough to go to school, based on their symptoms.

Know how to spot the signs

There are other types of infections to watch out for at this time of year, including bacterial infections such as scarlet fever. Although we see cases throughout the year, cases usually peak in the late winter and early spring.

Ensure your child is up to date with vaccinations.

Vaccines provide the best protection against many common illnesses. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, fewer children are getting routine vaccines, leaving schools vulnerable to outbreaks and increasing pressure on the NHS.

If your child is up to date on their NHS vaccination schedule, they should already be protected against diseases like whooping cough, measles, mumps and rubella throughout their school career, as most provide lifelong immunity.

Unvaccinated children are at higher risk of contracting these illnesses and having more severe symptoms than vaccinated classmates. Check your child’s red book or contact your GP surgery to ensure they are current on all vaccines.

School-age children and young people are offered vaccinations such as:

  • Flu: A different flu vaccine is needed every year. This year’s will be available from September 2023 and is given as a quick and painless nasal spray. Flu vaccination is being offered to all school-age children up to year 11 and for children aged 2 and 3 (on or before 31 August). When you get the electronic or paper consent form, please make sure you return it, so your child doesn’t miss their nasal spray vaccination session.
  • HPV: At age 12 to 13, the HPV vaccine is offered to protect against viruses that can cause genital warts or cancer.
  • MenACWY: 13- to 15-year-olds are offered this vaccine against meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia. This is usually given in year 9 or 10 along with the 3-in-1 teenage booster, but those who missed out can still get it on the NHS until their 25th birthday.

Through these preventative measures, and by recognising illnesses promptly, you can help your child stay healthy and keep school absences to a minimum this term.
