Message from our Chaplain Mairie

This week I was delighted to visit St Joseph’s primary school to visit the Year 6 pupils and to take the opportunity for some reflective time together in the parish church and hall.  It was a beautiful summer day and ideal for taking some time away from the everyday to reflect back on their past years in St Joseph’s and to look forward to the step into high school in September.
We considered the Sunday Gospel of Jesus calming the storm and that the journey across the sea was like the transition time. We agreed that our anxieties about the change that was on the way could be helped by our relationship with Jesus. As part of the day, the pupils started on a banner that they can use for their final events over the next few weeks. They also took advantage of the labyrinth in the church grounds to have an opportunity to pause and reflect on their lives. It was a really lovely day and I would like to thank the Year 6 staff, Fr Simon and Ann for their  welcome and hospitality.

Sports Presentation Evening

The Physical Education department at St Nicholas Catholic High School wish to invite you to the Sports Presentation Evening on Monday 15th July 2023 (6pm-7:30pm). All students who have represented the school this academic year are invited to attend and will receive a certificate for their contributions to school sport. Furthermore, those who have represented the school in four or more sports will receive a badge for their efforts.

There will also be awards for achievement and effort in school sport along with a ‘High Performance’ presentation and live performances on the night. Students who have been nominated for an award will be notified in school next week and will receive a ticket for themselves and two family members.

The evening will finish with our guest speaker, captain of the England Learning Disability Cricket team; Chris Edwards.

Admission is free but is all ticket. Tickets can be reserved using the Form attached: https://forms.office.com/e/h5ztuyAr2k

Each student will receive a ticket but there will be a two ticket limit per family. In the event you wish to reserve more than two additional tickets, please contact a member of the Physical Education department.

Whilst the event will celebrate the participation and successes of those students who have represented the school this academic year, all students and their families are welcome to attend to be part of the celebration and listen to the guest speaker.

Furthermore, in preparation for the evening, the Physical Education department are kindly requesting any pictures and/or information of students competing outside of school in either club, district, regional, national or international level. The information received will be used to create a High Performance presentation that will be shared on the night.

Please can you send in any pictures and/or information of your child participating in sport outside of school to Mr Armstrong (m.armstrong@st-nicholas.cheshire.sch.uk) by Monday 1st July 2024.

Language Ambassadors visit Greenbank School

On Friday 14th June, Mrs McAleenan and the Language Ambassadors visited Greenbank School to assist staff there with their French Celebration Day.
Staff and students from both schools enjoyed a carousel of different activities with a French theme including boules, number games and a French themed photobooth.
The highlight of the day was lunchtime when our students took food orders in French from the students at Greenbank and served the students the meals at their tables.
We look forward to working with Greenbank again as they celebrate all things Spanish on their next Languages Celebration Day!

Thank you and well done to the Language Ambassadors who were an asset to the school –

Rowing Success

On Wednesday six of our Year 8 pupils took part in the All Aboard Rowing Regatta at Warrington Rowing Club. The students have been learning how to row at Northwich Rowing Club since October and this was their first chance to compete on the water against crews from 35 other North West schools. The students did St Nicholas CHS proud, winning three out of four races on one of the warmest days of the year! Well done!

They have all done extremely well over the past 9 months and have represented the school with pride.

Mr Humphries is so proud to have been their lead for the last 9 months.

A-Level Taster Day

A-Level ART taster session
The art department delivered a fun A-Level taster session to the Year 11 students. The students enjoyed to paint eyes onto  pebbles which provided a unique surface to work with. They were asked to build up detail and used a variety of painting techniques. The students also enjoyed viewing the inspiring A-Level work from our students which varies from textiles to painting, sculpture to installation.
A-Level Chemistry taster session
Year 11 students enjoyed an introduction to Organic Chemistry in their Chemistry A Level taster lesson. They had fun making models of aldehydes, ketones and alcohols, and they rose well to the challenge of trying to name them and determine their molecular, displayed and structural formulae.

Science Visit to St Vincent's Primary

On Tuesday, Mrs Cameron came to visit us so help Year 6 dissect pig hearts. The dissection activity was linked to our Science topic where we are learning about the circulatory system and the different parts of the heart. It was a great chance for us to experience what practical science might look like as we get ready for high school. Although they were rather smelly and it tested our confidence, it was a fun experience and it was fascinating to feel the parts of an actual heart. We couldn’t believe how thick some of the walls and blood vessels were. Thank you,  Mrs Cameron – it was amazing!

Children for Change: Young Writers Competition 2024
(for year 7 and year 8s who are still 12 on the 12th July 2024)

Calling all budding authors and poets. If your child has been inspired by any of the books they have read during the readathon this week, they now have a chance to try their own hand at creating a story for the Children For Change Young Writers Competition.

Children for change is a collection of stories, illustrations and facts to inspire young readers to take action to protect the environment. The collection will be launched on October 7th 2024 as part of the UN World Habitat Day and will be FREE to download for EVERY child in the UK.

The organisers are looking for 10 children to join authors such as Liz Pichon, Konnie Huq and Charlie Higson to help create the special collection.

Entrants can write a fictional story or a poem. The piece of writing must help the reader understand that they can do something to make the world a greener, healthier place. The story or poem must be NO LONGER than 500 WORDS and must be submitted by 3pm Friday 12th July.

Students can either hand their entries into Ms. Roberts in the library, or if you want to enter your child yourself, you can do so via the following link:

Book of the Week

Nora O’Malley has had many names ad many identities. Brought up in the care of a con-woman, Nora spent her childhood being different girls to different marks until her older sister’s plot to save her from the life of a criminal finally succeeded. Now she is Nora. Sister, friend and girlfriend to the people she loves most. When she finds herself in the middle of an armed bank robbery gone wrong, Nora has to use the skills she learnt as a con artist to get herself and her friends out of trouble. As the secrets of her past begin to unravel, the bank robbers find out just how dangerous Nora can be.

This is a gripping page turner for year 9 +. It is set to be made into a film starring Millie Bobby Brown.
