Message from our Chaplain Mairie

Lent Charities
We have been delighted with the number of Forms who have already started their fundraising in style. Everything from football shootouts, bracelet sales, ‘Secret Bunny’s and cake sales. Lots of great ideas and loads of enthusiasm. Thanks to everyone who is supporting the students in their preparations. The CARITAS community will benefit a great deal from our efforts.

Lent in the Chapel
We are also holding class liturgies in the chapel between now and the end of term. We have been looking at the symbol of the Cross and Jesus’ teaching on forgiveness, whether forgiving ourselves or others. We have reflected on our own failings and grudges we may be holding against others, and have offered them in prayer. We have been moved by the reflective and respectful way our students have take part.

Thank you!
Mairie

Year 11 Geography Field Trip

Geography Field Trip

On Monday 11th and Wednesday 13th March, year 11 Geographers braved the elements in order to complete their Physical Geography Field Work.

Pupils where there to investigate if and how rivers change as they move downstream. We measured the velocity of the river using oranges and a stop watch, measured bedload and we managed to measure the width and depth of the River Alyn on Wednesday when the water levels had reduced in some parts, making it accessible to us.

The pupils will now use the data collected, as well as secondary data, to present the results and draw conclusions about the changes along the river. This information will be used to answer questions in their upcoming exams, specifically paper 3.

Work Experience at Manchester United

Work Experience at Manchester United

Last week one of our Year 12 Students (Abbie Cotterill) was lucky enough to have a week of Work Experience at Manchester United. During her time there Abbie was participating in the first ever girls only work experience programme. She looked at lots of different sectors of the business including: The Academy, Adidas, MUTV, Communications, Kit design, Megastore, Culinary sector, Nutrition and much more. Whilst there she gained valuable skills and met so many people from different backgrounds. Abbie is now saying “I’m even more interested in a career in a sporting industry”

Library and Literacy

The Carnegie shortlists have been announced

This is something we shadow in book club every Friday along with the Cheshire School Book Awards. I would love it if any other students, staff or parents would like to get involved by following along at home and sending reviews of any of the shortlisted books you have read. The awards cover both writing and illustrating so it would be great to get the opinions of younger siblings for some of the picture books shortlisted.

The 2024 Yoto Carnegie Medal for Writing shortlist is (alphabetical by author surname):

  • The Door of No Return by Kwame Alexander (Andersen Press)
  • The Song Walker by Zillah Bethell (Usborne)
  • Away with Words by Sophie Cameron (Little Tiger)
  • The Boy Lost in the Maze by Joseph Coelho, illustrated by Kate Milner (Otter-Barry Books)
  • Choose Love by Nicola Davies, illustrated by Petr Horáček (Graffeg)
  • Crossing the Line by Tia Fisher (Bonnier Books UK)
  • Safiyyah’s War by Hiba Noor Khan (Andersen Press)
  • Steady for This by Nathanael Lessore (Bonnier Books UK)

The 2024 Yoto Carnegie Medal for Illustration shortlist is (alphabetical by illustrator surname):

  • The Tree and the River by Aaron Becker (Walker Books)
  • April’s Garden by Catalina Echeverri, written by Isla McGuckin (Graffeg)
  • Lost by Mariajo Ilustrajo (Quarto)
  • The Wilderness by Steve McCarthy (Walker Books)
  • To the Other Side by Erika Meza (Hachette Children’s Group)

Book of the Week

The Taking of Jake Livingston

Jake Livingston is one of a few black students at St Claire Prep with very few friends. His brother is constantly getting into trouble and Jake has to deal with constant racism from his fellow students and worse, his teachers. All this would be bad enough on its own but Jake can also see ghosts. Everywhere he goes he sees the death loops of the final moments of past lives, from a former student being impaled by a javelin over and over again on the sports field to phantom buses exploding through the walls of his classroom. So far, so traumatising.

When a vengeful ghost called Sawyer Doon sets his sights on Jake, Jake’s life begins to implode. Doon is a teenage school shooter who murdered 6 of his classmates and is now attempting to continue his killing spree from the other side. Jake is the only one who can stop him but in doing so he could lose his grip on reality forever.

A gripping thriller for year 9s and above.

Year 11 English Revision Session

Water bottles in school

If students require a drink during the day, we encourage them to bring water bottles into school – especially on days when they have PE.

Drinks can also be purchased in the canteen and students are welcome to keep hold of the bottles and refill them with water.
