We return to our last half-term of the year with still lots to do and to look forward to.

Amazing fundraising

I was delighted and very grateful to witness to the many fundraising events held over the Lent term in support of CARITAS and CAFOD. Also, for the donations made through ParentPay. The final total for the Good Shepherd Fund this year amounts to an amazing £2,200. Thank you all very much for your support.

D-Day Anniversary

This week, together with the whole nation, we remembered the 80^th Anniversary of the D-DAY landings. It is important, even in the busyness of school, to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom. Our Sacred Space reflection is here.

Readathon

READATHON

We are pleased to announce that we will be participating in Read for Good’s READATHON this term. The charity raise money for children in hospital, providing them with books to read during what can be a very frightening and stressful experience. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will be asked to take part through sponsored reading from Monday 24^th – Friday 28^th June.

More information will shortly be sent out to parents and carers via Edulink.

Music News

Upcoming performances:

Orchestra and Choir will perform at the Royal Cheshire Show on Wednesday 19th June leaving school at 9am and will return at 3pm

Request for Trainers and Football boots

Have you got any unused trainers?

The PE department is running low on spare trainers, shin pads and football boots.

If you have any used footwear lurking at the back of your shoe drawer, please send them in and we will put them to good use should students forget their PE shoes.

The office frequently get requests for spare uniform – for spillages, forgotten blazers, broken zips, muddy trousers etc.

If you have any items your child has outgrown, we will happily take it off your hands.

Any extras will be sent to the green uniform and babybank.

The First Scholastic Graphic Novel Prize Shortlist

Scholastic have launched a new Graphic Novel Prize to celebrate the growing popularity and quality of the format. If you are unfamiliar with graphic novels and comics, but would like to purchase some for your child, this shortlist is a great place to start. Heartstopper, Barb The Brave and The Investigators are all really popular in the school library, even in the upper years. Derek Landy’s Bad Magic is part of the brilliant Skulduggery Pleasant series and guaranteed to entertain. Bad Magic has a rating of 15+ but it’s always best to check it out yourself as you may be happy for your younger teenager to read it.

Book of the Week

Girl, Goddess, Queen by Bea Fitzgerald

Greek myth retellings are bang on trend at the moment and Bea Fitzgerald has come out with an empowering coming of age tale about Persephone and Hades.

It is widely believed that Persephone was abducted by Hades and forced to live in the underworld against her will for six months of the year. In this version, she flees to the underworld to avoid an arranged marriage and imposes herself on long suffering Hades by invoking the laws of Xenia. As Persephone frees herself from the rule of her loving but controlling mother, she discovers a strength she never knew she had. The more time she spends with the annoyingly attractive Hades, the more she realises that she’s not the only one putting on a front to live up to everyone else’s expectations. Perhaps together they can take on the status quo.

Although the story obviously takes some liberties with the original myth, the book is a great introduction to Greek mythology and the volatile and vindictive natures of the Gods. We also meet some of the lesser known deities in Hades’ court who are an interesting bunch (Styx is my favourite). The slow-burn love story trope gets annoying at times, especially when Persephone goes all Bella Swan (you’ll know what I mean when you come to it), but it is worth putting up with for other elements of the plot.

Contains a couple of sexual references, dealt with very sensitively and nothing graphic.

Picnic in the Park
Sunday 9 June, 1 – 4pm, Grange Park Hartford

If you are free this Sunday afternoon, please come down to Hartford’s Picnic in the Park event. It takes place from 1pm to 4pm on the main park in Hartford (the one with the cricket pitch and playground on Bradburns Lane).

It is free-of-charge to attend and there are lots of free activities to enjoy – such as crafts, sport, mini golf, games, hook-a-duck, and more, plus you can meet some real hedgehogs! You may also want to bring some money for the BBQ, refreshments and stalls. There will be a DJ playing music, and Hartford Church of England High School’s orchestra will be playing at about 2pm.

There are toilet facilities at the cricket club on the park. If you are coming in the car, there are disabled parking spots next to the park for Blue Badge holders. The Grange School has kindly said that drivers can park in their Senior school car park.

The weather forecast for the picnic this Sunday is looking good, so cross your fingers for sun! We look forward to seeing you there.
