Newsletter 04.11.22

Message from our Chaplain Mairie
Thanks to everyone who have donated coats and warm clothing over the past few weeks. Ten bags of clothes were distributed to a number of charities. Any donations are always welcome throughout the year as I can always find a home for useful goods.
Also thank you very much for all the payments made on parent pay for the CAFOD collection this year. I hope to let you have the full total in next week’s newsletter.
This week has been a very reflective one celebrating the feast days of All Saints and All Souls, and we have remembered those family and friends who have gone before us in two lunchtime Masses. Next Friday we will share with the rest of the country, the two minute silence for Remembrance Day. Later in the month we will have a time of prayer in Sacred Space, when we will create a Sky of Stars for all students to remember their loved ones.  Whilst this can be a very poignant time of prayer it does let our students know that we are supported and prayed for by the whole community of St Nicholas.

Music Department News

Thanks to those members of the Chamber Choir who were able to come into school in half term for a rehearsal for our Concert with the Northern Chamber Orchestra at Tatton this term.

We have been tasked with learning some challenging repertoire, but as ever the choir are putting in the hours of rehearsal and getting to grips with all the music.

Thank you for all your hard work!

Mrs McKenna

Music Success – Charlie Potts

It is always great to hear about the on-going successes of our students when they leave us to go to university. Before half term Charlie Potts, who is in his second year studying Music at St Peters College Oxford, told us about two exciting awards he has been offered:

The Stephen Geddes Award for Musical Excellence by St Peter’s College, Oxford University. This is the highest musical award which the college offers, and notes that the recipient “[has] made a proven contribution to the College’s music in their first two years, and who will continue to do so”. The award is normally offered to final year students, but an exception in his case has been made due to all his contributions in his first year, the quality of his musicality, and taking the President role of the College Music Society and creating musical opportunities for as many students as possible. “

He has also auditioned for and been offered an Orchestral Apprenticeship with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra (OPO). The Apprenticeship programme is the highest they offer of their University Residency Scheme.

Dungeons and Dragons Club.

Every Wednesday the Dungeons and Dragons club meet in B2.

Here they explore fantasy worlds together as they embark on epic quests and have a great time together in the process.

Sporting success – Orla Geraghty and Niamh Whittaker
Rugby Success
Orla Geraghty and Niamh Whittaker, both in Year 9, won their Rugby match for Winnington at the weekend against Stafford away 51-19. 7 conversions for Orla and 4 try’s for Niamh – Fantastic work girls!!

Disruption is also expected to services, especially in the morning, on Tuesday 08 November and Thursday 10 November so the advice from Northern is to check before travelling on these days.
