A prayer to share

Hail, Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen

A Message from our Chaplain, Katy

Sacred Space reflections
This week in our sacred space we are pausing to reflect …
Do you have particular worry in your life at this time?
Or do you have a special concern for somebody else? Do somehow need a new beginning or a new opportunity in any area of your life in terms of family, relationships, school?
The answer to all of the above is: “Of course we do!”
The remedy for all of the above is to bring these things to Jesus:
Worry changes nothing: prayer changes everything!
In Sacred Space we can pray through the prayers we are familiar with now and a couple of new ones with real effort to bring anything we want to bring to the Lord.
In the Catholic church, October is a month dedicated to the Holy Rosary Prayer. We invite you to pray with this common prayer of the church as a family, to join in with Pope Leo’s intentions for an end to all wars and conflict and for any personal family intentions you may have.

Sixth Form Open Evening at St Nicholas – Tuesday 20th October

Is my child too ill for school?

Is my child too ill for school?  Keeping attendance positive.
At St Nicholas Catholic High School, we recognise that good attendance to school is key for students to succeed.  Extensive research from global studies shows that school attendance is one of the strongest predictors of success in examinations, from Year 7 upwards. Students with low attendance to school are statistically more likely to struggle with work due to missed content and broken routine.  We operate within the Local Authority and Government guidelines regarding attendance and will contact parents when attendance to school becomes a concern.
We know that children do get ill and sometimes cannot come to school for a genuine absence.  We would ask all parents to consult the NHS guide ‘is my child too ill for school’ when considering whether to keep them off; you can access this from the following link https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/is-my-child-too-ill-for-school/
Where possible, please try and arrange medical or dental appointments outside of the school day to avoid gaps in learning.
If your child is absent from school, please report their absence as soon as possible.  You can do this on Edulink or by calling the absence line on 01606 706000.

Cheshire Hike

Cheshire Hike Challenge

Well done to Year 8 students Matthew and Alex, who took part in the annual Cheshire Hike this weekend, walking an impressive 30km over two days. Also congratulations to Year 9 student Hazel, who completed the Pathfinder Plus route, covering 40km over the two days while carrying all the equipment she needed. A fantastic achievement by all, demonstrating determination, resilience and teamwork.

Music Success

Music Examination Successes

We are delighted to celebrate the recent achievements of several of our talented young musicians.

Congratulations to our violinists Grace , who achieved Grade 4, Andreu , who achieved Grade 3, and Fflur , who achieved Grade 2. Their hard work, dedication and commitment to regular practice have been rewarded with these excellent results.

A special mention must go to Rafael Wong, who has achieved the prestigious ARSM Diploma with an outstanding Distinction. This qualification is often attained by students at the end of Sixth Form, making Rafael’s achievement whilst still in Year 11 particularly remarkable. Even more impressively, he dropped just five marks across the entire examination.

These successes reflect not only the students’ musical talent but also their perseverance and determination. We are incredibly proud of all they have achieved and look forward to seeing their musical journeys continue to flourish.

Congratulations to Grace, Andreu, Fflur and Raf on their fantastic accomplishments.

Sporting Success

School teams in action

Well done to all of our sports teams who were in action last week!

Our Year 8 and Year 9 netball teams competed in fixtures against Weaverham and Cransley. The Year 9 team delivered an excellent performance, winning both of their matches, while the Year 8 team secured one win and one loss. Both teams represented the school brilliantly with their teamwork, determination and sportsmanship.

Our Year 8 boys’ football team were also in action and showed great effort and commitment throughout their fixture.

Congratulations to all of our students for their fantastic performances and for representing the school so positively.

Karting Success for Ethan

Congratulations to Ethan on an outstanding karting season! Racing in the Club100 Championship at Warden Law, Sunderland, Ethan finished 16th out of 56 drivers and secured Top Rookie for the third time in seven races, the only rookie to achieve this more than once. He also finished as the highest-placed rookie in the championship and has been invited to a gala celebration dinner in January. Well done Ethan!

Ju Jitsu Black Belt Success

Congratulations to Sophia, who achieved her Black Belt in Ju Jitsu yesterday. Since starting with Cheshire Budo Federation in January 2023, she has worked tirelessly through each grading, showing dedication, perseverance and commitment. This is a fantastic achievement and a testament to her hard work. Well done Sophia!

Summer Success in the Show Ring

Congratulations to Aimee on an incredible summer of success. At the Royal International Horse Show, she won the Show Pony 138cm class and was crowned Champion. In August, she repeated this achievement at the BSPS Summer Championship Show, winning her class, taking Champion, and then being named Supreme Champion. A fantastic achievement and one to be very proud of!

Library and Literacy

New Children’s Laureate Patrice Lawrence

Award winning author Patrice Lawrence MBE has been named the Children’s Laureate for 2026-2028.  Patrice Lawrence became widely known after writing Orangeboy in 2016. The award winning book follows Marlon, a teenager whose life changes dramatically after a tragic event. Since then, she has written many more books for children and teenagers, including Needle, People Like Stars and Granny Came Here on the Empire Windrush. Her stories often explore family, identity, friendship and belonging and can all be found in the school library and on Soraapp.com. Many of our students will remember the book Rat by Patrice Lawrence from their year 7 library lessons.
To celebrate the appointment of Patrice Lawrence, SORA have dedicated a selection of books on the app to her and other authors who write books which help children feel like they belong.
