A Message from our Chaplain, Mairie
After hosting the Shrewsbury Icon with St Nicholas last week, we were delighted on Monday to help continue its journey. Mrs Freestone, four student leaders, and I had the privilege of passing the Icon on to St Bede CPS in Weaverham. The children welcomed us warmly and received the Icon in a very special celebration. Their attentiveness and beautiful singing made the occasion truly memorable. We hope they enjoyed their time with the Icon, and we thank them sincerely for their kind welcome.
This Friday is CAFOD’s Family Fast Day, which invites families to choose a day to live simply—perhaps by giving up a treat—and make a donation to support those in need. This year’s Harvest Appeal focuses on finding long-lasting solutions to droughts caused by climate change. A ParentPay item will be available this week and next for those who wish to contribute.
This year’s Open Evening saw the chapel busier than ever, as families took time to enjoy the quiet space and learn more about the faith life of our school. Our display dedicated to our new saint, St Carlo Acutis, drew much attention—many children recognised him from his recent canonisation. It was a pleasure to meet so many families, and we hope they enjoyed their experience at St Nicholas Catholic High School.Sixth Form Open Evening – Tuesday 21st October

Sixth Form Update
Year 12 Induction Day:
Even though we have only been back for less than a month our Sixth Form students have been extremely busy. As part of you Sixth Form Induction our new Year 12 students spent the day at Battlefield Live in Knutsford, getting to know each other, using teamwork and coming together as a new year group were all important parts of the day…. As well as enjoying shooting the Teachers!
Student Leadership Morning:
Our Sixth Form Head Prefect Team and Senior Prefect Team lead a Student Leadership Morning for our KS3 Ambassadors and KS4 Prefects to establish what key priorities they would like to focus on throughout the year. They have chosen Human Dignity – where student Mental Health and Wellbeing will be key areas of focus. As part of this we will be launching our Oasis programme after half term setting up a peer support scheme with our Level 2 Trained Mental Health First Aid Sixth Formers. There will also be a focus on some celebration events for our Jubilee year.
Post 16 Subject and Careers Fair
To help support our Year 11 students with their Next Steps we set up a Post 16 Subject and Careers Fair, where our Sixth Form students were sharing their experience of different A Level subjects and their plans for the future, but most importantly the steps needed to be taken in order to achieve their ambition.

Library and Literacy
Students aged 11-18 are invited to take part in the I Have A Dream poetry competition from Young Writers. Entry forms are available in the Library and from Mrs Davenport in E3. The poem can be written in any form as long as the them is related to dreams. This can be an aspirational dream or an actual dream experienced when sleeping. The prizes are:
We are excited to announce our first (hopefully of many) open mic event, taking place in the library at lunchtime on the 23rd of October. Students are invited to perform their own poetry, or even just a poem they love, to an audience of fellow poetry lovers. If performing isn’t their thing, students are more than welcome to just come and listen to the performances…whilst enjoying some yummy lunchtime waffles, kindly provided by the English department.
The school is also taking part in the National Literacy Trust’s Verse Novel Challenge. The challenge is to simply read a verse novel. Verse novels are especially good for encouraging confidence in developing readers, whilst also being challenging enough for advanced readers. They can also encourage the appreciation of poetry in a modern and accessible format and are great at exploring emotionally powerful themes. We have a wonderful selection of Verse Novels available in the library. Please tell your children to come and check them out.
Sporting Success
We are so proud of our Year 7 netball team. late week they played their first game for St Nicholas. Every one of them worked hard and we had some excellent performances against Cransley, Hartford High and County High School Leftwich.

We have sofas, comfortable seating and desks where you can study on your own or with friends. Whilst you are here, you can enjoy free tea, coffee and juice – and of course lots of fantastic free books, graphic novels, dyslexia-friendly reads, e-books and audio books.
As a library member, you can access free Wi-fi, and you can book the computers for one hour per day, free of charge. If you need to print, it costs 20p per page in black and white as standard – or for homework, you can print up to 5 pages in black and white, free of charge.
Need to borrow an iPad to study at home? We have a limited number of tablets available. Contact us to discuss.
