Message from our Chaplain Mairie

This week we have been celebrating the feast of Christ the King, which is also World Youth Sunday. This Sunday we celebrate the young people of the world who carry our hopes and dreams for a future built on our gospel values of tolerance and peace. As we enter into Advent, we prepare for the birth of Emmanuel, God is with us. The idea of God as a little child reminds us of how important young people are. We pray for all our children and young people across the world. We pray that they will all be given the opportunity to nurture their gifts and talents to create a better world.

Advent begins this Sunday. Although the advent calendars may not open their doors until the 1st of DecemberAdvent begins on the Sunday closest to the feast of Saint Andrew ( 30th November). Next week we will have our Advent assemblies and launch our Advent charity which as always will be to support the work of the SVP and the local food banks. We appreciate that the need for these charities has increased over the past years.  We also appreciate that our own families may well be suffering financial hardship. We only ask that families donate what they can to help others in need. We thank you in advance for your support at this time.

Music trip to Oxford University

On Thursday 17th November 35 musicians set off at 7am for a visit to St Peters College, Oxford University. On arrival we had an access and admissions talk and our questions were also answered by two current Oxford students. We then had a tour and a lovely lunch in the college refectory. After lunch we joined some university students and staff to hear the lunchtime recital which featured St Nicholas’ past student Charlie Potts. One of the highlights of the concert was a composition written by one of the second year Music students. Here is a link to the recital https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqWosxc33tc

Following the recital we took part in a vocal workshop with the College’s Director of Music. It was challenging but also gave us an opportunity to consider how you can sight-sing or sight-read a piece of music successfully. It was a hectic but inspiring day and we headed back to school at 5pm.

Year 9 Games Galore
Year 9 are trialing a board games club to help encourage socialising and friendships. If invited to the club, students are welcome to bring up to two friends and spend the lunchtime (once per week) playing classics such as Twister and Monopoly. If you have not received an invitation and would be interested, please let Mrs Senior know!
Contact details and permission

Please let school know of any changes to contact details, including addresses and mobile phone numbers.

It is vital that school is able to contact parents and carers in case of an emergency.

Changes can be made in the Edulink App where you can also check your permissions such as photo permission and paracetamol in school.

Alternatively email admin@st-nicholas.cheshire.sch.uk.

Library and Literacy News
Bokbuzz Books
All year 7 students have had their Bookbuzz books.  Please remember they are yours to keep so they do not need to be returned to the library.  If your child is enjoying their book, ask them what it is they like about it. They may like other books by the same author, or of the same genre.  Another good tip is to look for which authors have reviewed the book on the front cover as they are likely to have written books in a similar style.
Book club
The first meeting of Book club this year was a huge success.  We welcomed many new members and had a great time discussing the Cheshire School’s Book Award books, making predictions about which books were going to be our favourites and deciding which books to read first. We’re already looking forward to our next meeting which will be the last one before Christmas so get ready for some festive treats!
Library Assistants
Next week, a sign up sheet will be available for students who would like to be considered for the role of Student Library Assistant this year. We currently have 10 spaces. See Ms Roberts for further information.

Department of Business Education News

Puddle Ducks

Our Year 10 GCSE Business students were very fortunate to have a Q&A session with very successful entrepreneur Jo Stone, Founder of Puddle Ducks swimming classes. Jo shared her story with our students and covered topics such as franchising, finance, risk and reward of setting up a business, market segmentation, market research and the importance of having a USP! We are so grateful to Jo for giving up her time to inspire our students.

Sporting success – Scarlett Day

Well done to Scarlett Day who won a first place rosette at the weekend. Scarlett is a show jumper and jumped 50 cm on her horse Apollo.

Fantastic achievement for both Scarlett and Apollo!

NSPCC – Talking about difficult topics

The NSPCC are highlighting the value of talking and offering advice to parents and carers about having a difficult conversation.

We’ve all been on the receiving end of a difficult conversation. But that doesn’t make it any easier when you have to have one with your child.

You might need to have a conversation where you:

  • have to break some bad news
  • have to ask about something you’re worried about
  • ask about topics you find uncomfortable – like sex or drugs
  • ask your child if they’re worried or scared by something
  • ask your child about a new behaviour
  • or anything else you feel will be difficult to bring up.

Whatever the subject, and however old the child you’re talking to, there are lots of ways to make it easier for you both. We have advice to help you decide how to talk to your child in a way that’s age-appropriate and supportive. However you know your child best so trust your judgement about what will work for your family best.

Accessing the Foodbank and  new Food Distribution Centre, Greenbank

Whilst we hope that everyone is coping well with the present situation, this is a difficult time and we appreciate that there may be some families who are undergoing hardship because of changes in work or personal circumstances. The majority of Foodbank users will only access the Foodbank three times. but those three times will make a difference.

So that we may support our St Nicholas family, we have registered as a referral organisation for the Foodbank. If you would like to have this support, we are able to process an on-line referral and arrange an appointment for you to collect a five-day food package from an agreed centre.

Please do get in touch if we can be of help in this manner. Our chaplain is the point of contact –  Mairie Gelling at m.gelling@st-nicholas.cheshire.sch.uk .  As always, our conversation and any information that we need to pass on to the Foodbank will be treated with the utmost confidentiality. For alternative access, you can also contact the local Citizens Advice in the Community on 07894 238963

For local families, a new Food Distribution Centre has now opened at Christchurch in Greenbank. The church is located at the Greenbank station car park. Open 12.15 – 12.45 every Wednesday.
