I’m sure, now that the days are getting colder, that many people are starting to look through their wardrobes for winter wear. If you have anything outgrown or not needed, but still in good condition, we can collect in school and donate on to the Green Uniform and Baby Bank in Winsford. Parents should keep school informed of any new and changing allergy information relating to their child.

Students are encouraged to have a good awareness of their symptoms and to inform a member of staff as soon as they have any concerns

All food products made and sold by the school catering service are clearly labelled with ingredient and allergen information. The school catering system records and identifies students with allergies at the point of sale, which is updated directly from school records. Student are encouraged to check with catering staff, before purchasing food or selecting their lunch choice and parents/carers are welcome to meet with the Catering Manager if they wish to discuss their child’s needs.

Bottles, other drinks and lunch boxes provided by parents for students with serious food allergies should be clearly labelled with the name of the child for whom they are intended.

Students are discouraged from purchasing or sharing food with other students.

Nuts and food containing nuts are discouraged from being brought in to school. For example, Peanut Butter, Nutella, Snickers and Reese products.

Any aerosols (deodorant/fragrance, etc), are prohibited items as they can present a health risk to any students with asthma and allergies.

This approach also applies to students when travelling on the school managed bus service where eating – especially items containing nuts – and the use of aerosols is not permitted.
Sporting Success
Football
Year 10 boys played in the Mark Allen Trophy Wednesday at Winsford Academy. They won 1-0 and are through to the finals next Wednesday.

Music and History Trip to France
At 5am on Thursday 16th October 60 Music and History students set off for a 4 day trip to the Opal Coast in France.
After missing our scheduled ferry(!) we arrived at our hostel, ate, unpacked and had a rehearsal, a quiz and an early night ahead of a hectic few days!
We visited Nausicaa, the largest sealife centre in Europe. Whilst the historians visited all the sealife attractions, the musicians enjoyed performing to the public and the sealife in 3 different areas within the venue. It was a really fantastic experience.
We visited Etaples cemetery where we laid a wreath in remembrance and learnt about the history surrounding this particular War Cemetery. We then got some time to shop and enjoy the beach in Le Touquet.
One of the highlights of the trip was our workshop at the bakery, where Bruno, the baker talked us through, in French(!), how to make small bread loaves. Our visit to Todt Batterie gave us valuable insight into the workings of the German army along the Atlantic wall and a visit to the Chateau in Boulogne Sur Mer included a number of interesting relics and artwork from across the centuries.
On the final evening of our visit, the musicians performed in St Nicolas church in Boulogne and were supported by the historians in the audience. The audience were treated to a variety of pieces across a range of genres from soloists, small ensembles, orchestra and choir.
Thanks to all our fabulous staff for giving up their time to take the students on the trip and to the students for being fantastic ambassadors and representatives of SNCHS.
UKMT Senior Maths Challenge
In October some of our year 11, 12 and 13 mathematicians sat the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge. The 90 minute paper contains 25 mutliple choice questions and tests mathematical reasoning and problem solving. The paper is aimed at A level students and is taken by the brightest and best mathematicians in the country, with certificates awarded to the top 40% of participants in a ratio 3:2:1 for Bronze, Silver Gold.

Words and Waffles
The Words and Waffles poetry event was hugely successful and we would like to thank all of the students who participated and spectated for making it such a wonderful occasion. Whilst we expected it to be well attended, we were blown away with the interest and enthusiasm shown by students from year 7, right the way up to year 13s. It goes without saying that the behaviour of all involved was impeccable and it was touching to see how rapt the audience were in their schoolfriends’ performances.
There are few words which can express how impressed all the attending staff were by the quality of the poetry and performances. Individual students surprised us with talents we didn’t know they had and there were a number of occasions where I spotted tears in the eyes of students and staff alike. We would especially like to thank all of the performers for being so brave for sharing their words, feelings and creativity to a roomful of people. And shout out to the English Dept for providing the waffles – they went down a treat!
Words and Waffles was a wonderful reminder of how special our St Nicholas family is and we will definitely be doing it again in the future.
Does your child like to read or write spooky tales? Please remind them about our terrifyingly terrific ghost story competition. We’re inviting students to write mini ghost stories in just 100 words to be submitted by the 10th of December. Entrants will then have the opportunity to perform their ghostly tales to their friends and teachers at our ghost story event in the library during lunchtime on the 12th December.
