Message from our Chaplain Mairie
Lent Charity Fundraising

CARITAS Shrewsbury
We have begun the delivery of our Saint assemblies to introduce our Charity Challenge for Lent. It has been interesting to see how each saint inspires us to act with kindness and compassion. Each form has been asked to raise as much as it can during Lent, with a minimum challenge of £30.  Part of this will go to CARITAS Shrewsbury to support their work in the Diocese. CARITAS provides support for those in need within our local Diocese. This includes working with schools, families, community groups and individuals to provide practical and emotional support. Here is a link to the current Impact Report that gives details of the breadth of support that CARITAS has been able to offer, locally, over the past year.
Support for CARITAS International – Ukraine and Türkiye/Syria
CARITAS International is part of the Disasters Emergency Committee which is supporting the ongoing Ukraine Humanitarian Scheme. Following the dreadful earthquake that has affected so many people and communities in Türkiye and Syria, our fundraising will include support for the CARITAS agencies in those countries. CARITAS already has ‘feet on the ground’ in both countries. Here is their latest, though certainly already out of date,  report on the first response Earthquake in Türkiye  and Syria, Caritas network launches first phase of aid – Caritas
I am sure that you agree that the work that they do is invaluable, and we thank you in advance for supporting your child with their fundraising. Students will not start their fundraising activities until after the half-term, but if you would like to donate to the charity in the meantime, there will be an option on Parentpay from this weekend. As a member of the Disaster Emergency Committee, Caritas will benefit from the matched funding promised by the UK Government.

BBC Amazing Authors Competition
Calling all budding authors………Blue Peter are running a writing competition with some amazing prizes. If your child loves to write, let them know about this exciting opportunity. All they have to do is :
The lucky winner will meet one of the UK’s biggest children’s authors, Tom Fletcher, go behind-the-scenes to see how books are published and receive their story or poem in print! Not only that, but Tom will also read their work and it will become an audio book on BBC Sounds. Their character’s adventure will be animated by Aardman to create a wonderful story which will be shown on Blue Peter and CBeebies Bedtime Stories!
And that’s not all, the winner will receive a framed picture from the animation and of course an Orange Competition Winner’s badge!

Enter the competition via the link below:
And for writing tips from Tom Fletcher,

Department of Business Education – The Economics of Football!

The Year 13 A Level Economics class were fortunate to have a guest speaker in the form of Dr Stephen Davies from the Institute of Economic Affairs.  Dr Davies questioned why the game has more money but clubs have bigger financial problems.  The talk was truly engaging and students were able to apply economics, in particular Game Theory, to the Premiership and contrasted our system to that of American sports.

Alumni

At St Nicholas we are very proud of our students, past and present.
We always enjoy hearing about their future journeys and the success they achieve after studying with us.

Jason Kilshaw has let us know how he is getting on.
He says : The allocated enrichment time at St Nicholas Sixth Form allowed me to achieve my position, as it allowed me to gain valuable school experience which has helped me with my University applications, and has helped me to decide on a teaching career. The teachers at St Nicholas were outstanding and gave me an example of something to aspire to be.
