Religious Education in the sixth form is a central part of Catholic education and should form the core of your experience here at St Nicholas’ Catholic 6th form.
All Catholic colleges around the country devote 5% of the Curriculum time to CORE RE. As a Catholic 6th form, we firmly adhere to this because of:
- Who we are…
- What we stand for…
- What St Nicholas has taught us….
The study of Core RE will enable you:
- To develop a good understanding of Catholic Social Teaching
- To develop an awareness of how religious teachings influence social-political attitudes and action
- To engage fully and to contribute to the betterment of the society in which you live.
At St Nicholas Catholic 6th form College, we recognise that young people like you face many different challenges in today’s world and that you will have to make choices and decisions about your life.
In CORE RE, you will not be presented with pre-packaged answers but instead you will be offered the opportunity to develop the skills and outlook to ask the questions that will enable you to make informed decisions that help you make sense of the world in which you live.
How is CORE RE taught?
- It is based on Catholic Social Teaching namely: Human Dignity, Solidarity, the Common Good, Preferential Option for the Poor, Stewardship, The Dignity of Work, Rights and Responsibilities
- It follows our Gospel Values Methodology of SEE, THINK AND ACT
- Therefore, you have the opportunity to reflect on issues that arise in society such as BLM, Homelessness, Poverty, Inclusion, Social Mobility, Human Trafficking etc.
- You will contribute to discussions, make presentations, design campaign videos and promotion posters, plan and lead assemblies to raise awareness
- CORE RE also will contribute to your UCAS personal statement and to your CV for Job applications.
Expectations:
- All students in the 6th form attend CORE RE lessons.
- To get the most out of CORE RE, it is vital you actively get involved! You all have a voice and an opinion, so let’s hear it!
- There are also times where you will be expected to help out in the local community as well as the school community. (ie parishioners Christmas meal/ Minni market etc)
How does Core RE contribute to my future career?
- The study of Core RE will:
- Equip you with transferable and people skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, effective communication, empathy, observation and reflection
- Make you more employable since you will stand out as a person equipped with a lot more than book learning
The Russell group of top Universities has made it clear that Religious Studies provides “suitable preparation for university” and Oxford and Cambridge include it in their top level list of “suitable Arts A levels”.
What Year 12 and 13 students say about CORE RE:
“It is relevant to everyone. We should learn about all people and different challenges in the world.”
“It helps me understand both religious and non-religious viewpoints.”
“I enjoyed researching stories such as the Holocaust. Documentaries also help to understand more serious situations that are going on in the world today.”
“I found learning about the past with religion and how other people use religion everyday interesting.”
